Wakonda, the balancing element of everything
Knowing how to listen to Nature is the key to access a better, more sustainable world in line with the needs of Man and our Planet.
THE BENEFITS OF OPUNTIA
Read below the countless benefits that can be gained from a single plant.

A soil re-fertilizer
Intensively cultivated, Opuntia ficus indica (Ofi) biologically re-fertilizes no longer “productive” lands in a limited number of years.

It fights desertification
Entire desert areas of Chile, Mexico and Brazil have been converted into fodder plantations for intensive farming to produce meat and milk, thus greening land that had been abandoned due to desertification.

Healthy
Healthy foods and drinks can be obtained from Opuntia, which are fundamental in the fight against so-called “well-being diseases”, such as hyperglycemia, hypertension, diabetes and hypercholesterolemia. Furthermore, Opuntia has important protective qualities of the digestive system, in particular for the liver, intestine and colon.

An excellent bioenergy producer
It represents an exceptional biomass for the production of bioenergy, with a productivity up to 4 times greater than the commonly used corn silage, at a lower cost, but above all with a ten times smaller water footprint.

Low cost and highly productive
Through Intensive cultivation and the improvements introduced by Wakonda, it is possible to obtain on marginal land approximately four times the dry matter obtained with corn on the best land, with 10 times less water consumption.

Zero waste in the supply chain
Everything from the Opuntia plant is used: waste from the production of flours, feed, extracts for cosmetics and drinks are delivered as biomass to a biodigester and then transformed into biogas, electricity, heat and fertilizer for organic farming.

High Quality animal feed
Being rich in water, mineral salts, carbohydrates and polysaccharides, Ofi is the perfect nourishment for animals, especially in the warmer seasons because it is very hydrating. It also allows the expansion of livestock farming in inhospitable areas of the planet where the lack of water and/or the soil exhaustion do not favor animal husbandry.

FOOD
“From peasant food” to “Food of the Future”
From prickly pear cladodes it is possible to create various foods: flours for bread, pasta, pizza, piadine, desserts as well as semi-finished products for the food industry as natural thickeners. The younger cladodes can be eaten in salads, or blanched, and their introduction into the diet is beneficial to both Plante and Consumer health. An ancient food that Wakonda projects into the future to help feeding our Planet.

ENERGY
Clean energy, where you need it, at the right cost
This Biomass can be cultivated with high yield and low water footprint in arid, semi-arid and desertified areas thanks to the innovations introduced by Wakonda. All this is possible thanks to a holistic approach that leads to “feeding” the need for energy in a decentralized manner where it is needed, at the lowest possible cost, making abandoned land fertile again.

ANIMAL FEED
The transition from forage to protein feed.
Thanks to a proprietary innovative process, Wakonda manages to raise the protein component from 4.5% up to 30% of the dry matter. This means shortening supply chains, reducing extra-farm purchases and making farming activities possible even on marginal or semi-desert land.
